What are you backing up?

What are you backing up and what do you actually need to protect?

Data keeps growing at a staggering pace and companies and organizations struggle to keep up with what needs to be stored and protected.
As a result, all that data ends up being treated the same way.  It is stored on the same storage, presented through the same servers and interfaces to the user and all backed up with the same retention policies.

But when you think about it, some of the data being generated by your operation doesn’t all have the same value to it. So why treat it the same way?
A word file might have a different relevance to the business then a spreadsheet.  A .pdf might have more importance than a .jpg and so forth.

When moving to a cloud backup service the first question will be: how much data do you need to protect?

 

Don’t protect all data the same way

So when you look at all the data that has stacked up over the years, you have to ask yourself: What’s relevant for my business today?

Your backup policy and retention should reflect the data being protected.
Enterprise cloud backup solutions offer many options to do this and to filter down data based on their type, age or even size.

From that point we can build the correct data protection profiles.
Retention can be specific for certain file types and your organisation might want to treat data that hasn’t been modified in a certain amount of days in a different way.

All of this gives you better control over your data protection.  It also gives your organisation a much better overview of the data stored and how it is being protected.
Now you are in the driver seat again, which is important when you move to a cloud service provider.
